In Less Than Two Hours After Birth, Mother Earns Custody of the Child: Celebration of Achievements at Graduation

During the scheduled graduation ceremony, a woman who was about to receive her four-year degree unexpectedly went into labor and gave birth to a son. Jada Syles successfully earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, specializing in pre-law. After the commencement ceremony at Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana, Syles welcomed her baby into the world just a few hours later.

In a heartwarming turn of events, Sayles was able to receive her well-deserved degree in a special ceremony organized in her hospital room less than a day after giving birth. Even though the location was different, the significance of the moment was not diminished.

College President Walter Kimbrough took the initiative to visit Ochsner Baptist Medical Center in order to personally confer Sayles with her degree, celebrating her dedication and accomplishments in light of the exceptional circumstances.

After successfully completing her bachelor’s degree, Jada Sayles, who had given birth at the hospital, affectionately kissed her newborn son, Easton, and expressed her proudness, saying, “I am proud of myself.” The moment felt incredibly surreal to her, and she admitted that it was only when Dr. Kimbrough presented her with the degree that she truly understood its significance.

By chance, Sayles’ due date coincided with her graduation day, as indicated by the doctors. Despite her circumstances, she remained determined to participate in the ceremony and even steamed her graduation gown at a nearby motel close to the campus. Leading up to the day before her due date, Sayles’ pregnancy had shown no signs of progress. She mentioned, “I didn’t dilate at all. After graduation, I was actually supposed to be induced at 5:00.” The sequence of events had deviated from the original plan, emphasizing the unexpected nature of her achievement and the subsequent birth of her child.

When asked about being able to attend the commencement on campus, Salyes responded that the hospital event was much more enjoyable. She explained that having her son, Easton, in her arms made it a truly memorable experience and the best academic moment of her life. Jokingly, Salyes mentioned to Fox News Digital that her son should have some “great Mother’s Day” presents for her, considering the unique circumstances surrounding his birth just hours after she received her college degree. As Easton grows older, Salyes plans to share the story of his birth with him. Salyes describes Easton as a sweet baby who spends most of his time napping and enjoys being close to his mother. Her future plans involve enrolling in law school and pursuing a career in public policy.
